What is Functional Testing?

Definition
Functional testing evaluates whether retired IT equipment still works properly, determining if it can be remarketed for value recovery or should be sent directly to recycling.

Functional testing in ITAD is the process of evaluating retired IT equipment to determine whether it is operational and suitable for resale in secondary markets. Testing involves powering on the device, running diagnostic software, checking all components (CPU, RAM, storage, display, ports, battery), and grading the device by functionality and cosmetic condition.

Equipment that passes functional testing can be remarketed, generating revenue that offsets disposition costs. Devices are typically graded on a scale — Grade A (fully functional, minimal cosmetic wear), Grade B (fully functional, moderate cosmetic wear), Grade C (functional with minor issues), and Grade F (non-functional, recycle).

For businesses, functional testing within an ITAD program means your retired equipment has the best chance of generating value recovery. A good ITAD provider performs thorough testing before making disposition decisions, maximizing the return on equipment that still has market value while ensuring non-functional equipment is properly recycled.
