Our Destruction Methods

NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 Wiping

We use enterprise-grade software aligned to NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 guidance to overwrite or sanitize drives. This can allow reusable drives to be remarketed while rendering previous data unrecoverable.

Physical Shredding

For damaged drives or maximum security requirements, we physically shred the storage media into scrap metal. This is the ultimate form of data destruction.

Degaussing

A controlled magnetic field erases the data on traditional spinning hard drives (HDDs) in seconds, making it a fast option for bulk sanitization. Degaussing does not work on solid-state drives (SSDs); see below.

On-Site vs Off-Site

We process drives at our secure Sugar Land facility (Off-Site). For large enterprise projects, we can arrange secure logistics for On-Site verification.

SSD vs. hard drive (HDD) destruction

Solid-state drives (SSDs) store data on flash memory, so they can't be degaussed and an ordinary overwrite can leave recoverable data behind. For SSDs we use the manufacturer's secure-erase or cryptographic erase aligned to NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, or physical shredding for end-of-life devices. Traditional hard drives (HDDs) can be wiped, degaussed, or shredded. Not sure what you have? Tell us the device type and we'll recommend the right method.

Our Process

From pickup to final documentation, here's how we ensure complete data security.

Your Certificate of Data Destruction

Every job closes with a signed Certificate of Data Destruction, your audit-ready proof that each drive was sanitized or shredded. The certificate lists the device serial numbers, the destruction method used (NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 Clear, Purge, or physical shred), the date of destruction, and the responsible technician, so it stands up to HIPAA, FACTA, GLBA, SOX, and PCI-DSS audits.

Data Destruction FAQ

What is NIST 800-88 data destruction?

NIST SP 800-88 is a set of guidelines published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology for media sanitization. EverTrade aligns its workflows to NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2 for documented media sanitization.

Do you provide a Certificate of Destruction?

Yes, we provide a signed Certificate of Destruction for every job. This includes serial numbers, destruction method used, and date of destruction for your compliance records. Learn what a Certificate of Destruction includes →

Can your data destruction support HIPAA requirements?

Yes. Our documentation, chain of custody, and media sanitization workflows support regulated organizations that need evidence for HIPAA, FACTA, GLBA, SOX, and PCI-DSS records.

What's the difference between wiping and shredding?

Data wiping overwrites all data, allowing drive reuse. Physical shredding destroys the drive completely. Both render data unrecoverable, but shredding is preferred for maximum security.

How much does it cost to destroy a hard drive?

Hard drive destruction is priced per drive, with volume discounts for larger projects. Your cost depends on the number of drives, whether you need wiping, degaussing, or physical shredding, and pickup versus drop-off. Send us your drive count for a free quote. Business pickups across Houston and Sugar Land may qualify for free collection.

How do I dispose of old hard drives?

Avoid putting old hard drives in the trash. Even drives that no longer power on can still hold recoverable data. Drop them off at our Sugar Land facility or schedule a business pickup, and we will wipe, degauss, or shred them and issue a signed Certificate of Destruction. The drives are then responsibly recycled rather than landfilled.

Does Best Buy destroy hard drives?

Retail trade-in and recycling programs accept some electronics but do not provide certified data destruction or a Certificate of Destruction, which most businesses need for HIPAA, FACTA, or SOX records. As a local ITAD provider, EverTrade gives you a documented chain of custody, serialized destruction, and an audit-ready certificate.
