NIST SP 800-88-Aligned Sanitization
Eligible reusable drives go through a documented, NIST SP 800-88-aligned sanitization process before redeployment or disposition, with the result recorded against the drive serial number.
Physical Processing for End-of-Life Drives
Drives that are failed, retired, or not approved for reuse are physically disabled in-house so they cannot be reinstalled, then routed to responsible recycling. See our hard drive destruction service.
SSDs and Flash Media
Solid-state and flash storage is handled differently from magnetic drives. Tell us what you have and we will confirm the handling and documentation for your project before it starts.
On-Site vs Off-Site

SSD vs. hard drive (HDD) destruction
Solid-state drives (SSDs) store data on flash memory, so an ordinary overwrite can leave data behind in areas the host cannot address. NIST SP 800-88 points to the drive's own sanitize command, cryptographic erase, or physical destruction for SSDs. Traditional hard drives (HDDs) can be sanitized by a verified overwrite or physically processed. Not sure what you have? What's the difference between sanitization and physical destruction?
Data sanitization overwrites the data so an eligible drive can be reused. Physical processing disables the drive so it cannot be reused and routes it to recycling. Choose sanitization for healthy drives that will be redeployed, and physical processing for failed or retired drives. Each drive is recorded either way.
How much does it cost to destroy a hard drive?
Hard drive destruction is priced per drive, with volume discounts for larger projects. Your cost depends on the number of drives, the drive types, and pickup versus drop-off. Send us your drive count for a free quote. Business pickups across Houston and Sugar Land may qualify for free collection.
How do I dispose of old hard drives?
Avoid putting old hard drives in the trash. Even drives that no longer power on can still hold recoverable data. Drop them off at our Sugar Land facility or schedule a business pickup, and we will wipe or sanitize them per NIST SP 800-88 and issue a signed Certificate of Destruction. The drives are then responsibly recycled rather than landfilled.
