Asset recovery is the practice of extracting maximum remaining value from retired IT equipment before it reaches the recycling stage. This involves functional testing, grading, data wiping, cosmetic refurbishment, and remarketing equipment to secondary markets.

A well-managed asset recovery program can significantly offset the costs of IT refreshes. Equipment like recent-generation laptops, servers, networking gear, and enterprise storage often retains substantial resale value. Even older equipment may have value for parts harvesting.

The asset recovery process starts with testing each device to determine functionality. Working equipment is data-wiped, graded by condition, and sold through reseller channels, auctions, or direct sales. Revenue from resale is typically shared between the equipment owner and the ITAD provider, creating a financial incentive to retire equipment through proper channels rather than simply discarding it.
