What is e-Stewards?

e-Stewards is a certification program administered by the Basel Action Network (BAN) that focuses on preventing hazardous electronic waste from being exported to developing countries. The certification is one of the highest standards in the electronics recycling industry.

e-Stewards-certified recyclers commit to a strict no-export policy for hazardous e-waste, meaning they won't ship toxic materials to countries with less stringent environmental regulations. The standard also covers data security, worker safety, and environmental management.

Both R2 and e-Stewards certifications indicate that a recycler follows responsible practices. While R2 focuses on comprehensive operational standards, e-Stewards places particular emphasis on the downstream fate of materials and preventing dumping in developing nations. Many responsible recyclers hold both certifications.
